Public Administration, BS/MPA (Inspection and Oversight)

Description. The major in Public Administration examines decision making, leadership and management in public agencies and nonprofit organizations. It introduces students to the field of public administration, including its scope, content, literature and relationship to other disciplines. This is accomplished through a curriculum that focuses on developing core competencies for new and mid–career public administration students.

The mission of the Master of Public Administration in Inspection and Oversight Program at John Jay College of Criminal Justice is to prepare students for public service careers in inspection and oversight organizations and to advance the study of Public Administration through scholarly and applied research and community service. The program seeks to inspire students to the highest ideals of citizenship and public service, reinforced by a commitment to accountability, transparency, and equity. The program offers students opportunities to acquire professional and political knowledge and skills, based on academic studies, public service experience and partnerships with faculty in scholarly endeavors.

Learning outcomes. Students will:

  • Identify the core mechanisms of public administration including the organization and management of human and financial resources. 
  • Discuss the political, economic, legal and social environments of public policy and administration.
  • Explain the unique challenges and opportunities of providing public goods and services in a diverse society. The includes the understanding of public administration and policy in an international and comparative context. 
  • Define and diagnose decision situations, collect and analyze data, develop and implement effective courses of action, and evaluate results
  • Organize and communicate information clearly to a variety of audiences by means of oral presentation, written documents and reports, and quantitative graphs, charts and tables.
  • Pre-service and in-service students synthesize and apply decision-making, leadership and management skills in public agencies or non-profit organizations.

Undergraduate Electives

Students must complete 23-26 credits of electives to fulfill the undergraduate portion of the degree program.  12-15 credits must be in the liberal arts or sciences.  Students have free choice of electives for an additional 8-11 credits.  Students may opt to complete a minor with their elective credits being mindful of their liberal arts and sciences requirements (60 credits).

Examples include independent private sector inspections general (IPSIGs), and court-appointed or contractually-mandated monitors.
