SCI 225 The Science of Cosmetics

3 hours

In this course students will learn the scientific principles of cosmetics. Cosmetics are substances that may be rubbed, poured, sprinkled, or sprayed onto our bodies for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness or altering appearances. Many claims that are commonly made today in advertising and marketing for cosmetic products have not been recognized by the Food and Drug Administration. This course investigates cosmetics in the broader context of chemistry and medical science and identifies false claims as well as educates students about potential toxicity of products used in the cosmetic and personal care industry. A basic understanding of biology and chemistry is expected.
