PSY 268 Therapeutic Interventions in Chemical Dependency

This course focuses on a variety of therapeutic issues and counseling techniques involved in the treatment of alcoholism and substance abuse. Topics include the philosophies and practices of accepted models of treatment; initial interviewing, diagnostic assessment, consultation with family members; and development of treatment plans. Emphasis is placed on developing methods for maintaining a therapeutic alliance. Technical problems in interviewing, leading groups and working with families are explored through the use of case material and role playing methods.
This course is a part of the Addiction Studies Program, which enables students to fulfill the educational requirements for the Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC).
