New York State Scholarships for Academic Excellence

This program provides scholarship assistance to outstanding New York State high school graduates. Each year, 8,000 scholarships are awarded—up to 2,000 scholarships of $1,500 per year, and 6,000 scholarships of $500 per year—to top scholars from registered New York State high schools. Awards are based on student grades in certain Regents exams. Recipients can also receive other non-loan student aid, but the total cannot exceed the cost of attendance. To apply, students should see their high school guidance counselors.

Excelsior Scholarship

The scholarship will be available each academic year, subject to NYS Budget approval, to John Jay College students who meet the following criteria:

The Excelsior Scholarship will be applied to each qualifying student’s financial aid package after all other aid, including TAP, Pell, City Council Scholarship, college scholarships and other grants or scholarships. Students MUST complete the FAFSA and TAP applications BEFORE they can apply for the Excelsior Scholarship.

Students can learn more about the Excelsior Scholarship application and deadline at: HESC.NY.GOV. Please note that only new students need to apply.  Students already receiving the scholarship, or otherwise deemed eligible, only need to complete a FAFSA and TAP application for each academic year.
