Freshman
All entering freshman applicants are considered for admission based on their high school academic averages, academic units and/or GED scores. A diploma from an accredited high school, an equivalency diploma, or a diploma from a United States Armed Forces Institute is required for entrance to the College. A high school certificate or an Individualized Education Program (IEP) diploma is not acceptable.
An applicant for freshman admission must present evidence of having received a diploma from an accredited high school. Students from non-English speaking countries must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination (SEE the International Students section for details). Students can also take the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or PTE Academic. A score of 6 is required on the IELTS or 44 on the PTE Academic or 90 on Duolingo. In addition to meeting the College’s other requirements, freshman students who want to major in forensic science program must have an average of 81 and have taken 3 .5 units of math and Science and taken the Chemistry Regents or a Chemistry course.
An applicant who does not meet these criteria may apply to one of the CUNY community colleges and transition back to John Jay through the CUNY Justice Academy after completing their associate degree.
