PHI 2XX Ethics of Artificial Intelligence
3 credits.
The world is being transformed by artificial intelligence (AI). It decides what we see, who we should date, and whether we are a good fit for a job. Chatbots and other artificial agents are replacing artists, writers, and coders—often by using their work without their permission. Militaries and police already put AI to work in numerous ways, from surveillance to combat. Each new instance of AI brings with it both promise and peril.Evaluating the ethics of AI requires understanding the scientific basis of this powerful technology and evaluating it using the rigorous tools of philosophical reasoning. This course serves as an introduction to questions about how AI is impacting our lives—and how we should respond. Topics include AI companionship, warfare, university education, artistic creation, politics, the environment, and criminal law.
