Excelsior Scholarship

The scholarship will be available each academic year, subject to NYS Budget approval, to John Jay College students who meet the following criteria:

  • Have a family income (Federal Adjusted Gross Income) of $125,000 or less
  • File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) application
  • Are a resident of NYS and have resided in NYS for 12 continuous months prior to the beginning of the term
  • Are a U.S. citizen, eligible non-citizen, or eligible based upon a New York Dream Act Application.
  • Attend full-time, and complete 30 or more credits that are required for their program of study per year
  • Are in good academic standing
  • Agree to reside exclusively in New York State and not be employed in any other state for a continuous number of years equal to the duration of the award (a contract must be signed with NYS HESC).

The Excelsior Scholarship will be applied to each qualifying student’s financial aid package after all other aid, including TAP, Pell, City Council Scholarship, college scholarships and other grants or scholarships. Students MUST complete the FAFSA and TAP applications BEFORE they can apply for the Excelsior Scholarship.

Students can learn more about the Excelsior Scholarship application and deadline at: HESC.NY.GOV. Please note that only new students need to apply.  Students already receiving the scholarship, or otherwise deemed eligible, only need to complete a FAFSA and TAP application for each academic year.
