Class Attendance
CUNY is a non-attendance taking institution as defined by Title IV regulation 34 CFR 668.22(b)(3)(i). Daily attendance records are not collected by the College Registrar’s. CUNY does not require professors to take attendance, and any attendance records are taken for the professors’ own purposes.
The number of absences that constitute excessive absence is determined by the individual instructor, who announces attendance guidelines and grading percentages at the beginning of the semester in the course syllabus. Excessive absence may result in a failing grade for the course. Students who register during the Change of Program period after classes have begun are responsible for the individual course attendance policy, effective from the first day of the semester.
Camera Use Guidance for Online and Hybrid Courses
In June 2024, CUNY issued a university-wide guidance regarding camera use for hybrid and online learning. Faculty may require students to activate their cameras during class periods or for remote testing. Faculty who intend to utilize this should clearly state this on course syllabi. Additionally, class sections where this parameter is in effect will be noted during registration.
